The Brecon Carreg plogging team will be returning to this year’s Cardiff Bay 10K to help keep the roads clean and tidy on event day.
If you haven’t heard of the term ‘plogging’ before, it simply means the act of picking up litter while jogging or running. The term was coined in Sweden through merging the Swedish verbs plokka (picking up) and jogga (jogging).
The ploggers have been working with Run 4 Wales for a number of years, helping with its environmental aims, highlighted within its Green Action Plan. And the team are delighted they will be back again for 2024.
They will be out in force at both the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K on Sunday 19 May, as well as the Principality Cardiff Half Marathon later in the year, to help minimise the impact race day has on its host location.
Julie is a regular Brecon Carreg plogger. She said: “I participated in the very first plogging event for Cardiff Bay 10k. I decided to help out as I wanted to give something back to an event that I have previously run in and thought this was a different way.
“I strongly believe in recycling and felt that plogging was an ideal way of helping on two fronts – supporting a running event and also helping with recycling. I found it really enjoyable, as I was able to interact with the runners, supporters out on the course and event organisers. I would recommend anyone thinking of taking part as a ‘Plogger’ to do it.”
Eleri Morgan, Head of Marketing at Brecon Carreg, said: “The enthusiasm from our plogging teams never fails to amaze us. They turn out rain or shine at events across the country and play a very important role in helping reach the recycling and sustainability targets at some of Wales’ biggest running events. We’re excited to see another big turnout of ploggers at the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K next month – join us in giving them a massive cheer if you spot them on the course!”
Gareth Ludkin, Head of Sustainability at Run 4 Wales, added: “The plogging team at Brecon Carreg have become an integral part of our events over the years and play such an important role in helping us to achieve our environmental aims.
“They help us minimise the impact our events have in Cardiff, help keep the streets clear of rubbish and ensure as much litter as possible is recycled.”
