Five Memories From Five Years Of The Cardiff Bay Run!

This month marks five years since the Cardiff Bay 5 Mile became the Cardiff Bay Run back in 2017. To celebrate, we’re looking back on some of the best moments in the race’s history. Which of these do you remember?

Omar Ahmed smashes a new course record in 2021

In September 2021, the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run deviated away from its usual Spring spot in the running calendar because of the COVID-19 pandemic. September obviously suited Omar Ahmed who sprinted home in an unbelievably quick 28:42, 25 seconds than the previous men’s record set by Welsh athlete Dewi Griffiths.

Brecon Carreg become title partner in 2018

To commemorate their 40th anniversary, Brecon Carreg planned a year of long of activity in 2018, including become Title Partner of the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run for the first time. The partnership was such a success, it remains in place in 2022. From a cottage industry where water was bottled by hand, Brecon Carreg have gone onto big things, aligning greatly with our sustainability agenda and pledge to reduce plastic waste. Their bottles are now made of 51% recycled plastic and they have pledged to get to 100% by 2025!

Elsey Davis Sets Record Pace in 2018

In the first year of Brecon Carreg’s title partnership, international runner and NHS doctor Elsey Davis set the pace with a new course record, completing the race in a fantastic 33:42. The Bristol & West AC athlete won the women’s race by nearly a full minute, putting on a brilliant performance for the Roald Dahl Plass crowd.

Event sells out for the first time in 2017

For its first year as the rebranded Cardiff Bay Run following the Cardiff Bay 5 Mile, the event sold out for the first time in 2017! The event is now one of Wales’ most popular 10Ks and sells out year upon year, attracting some of the UK’s best 10K athletes. Those keen to take part in 2022 are encouraged to register soon, to avoid missing out.

Wales Millennium Centre features on 2021 medal

Cardiff Bay isn’t short of iconic landmarks, with the Pierhead Building, Norwegian Church and Cardiff Bay Barrage all featuring on the flat and fast route. However, for us, our favourite medal to date has been the September 2021 10K finisher’s medal which featured the beautiful Wales Millennium Centre. Which has been your favourite?
